Bone Needles (1 July 2017)

\"boneSpend a day in the woods making a bone needle using Stone Age tools and techniques. We\'ll be using flint and stone tools to work deer bone into these beautiful and useful needles. You might also like to make bone beads or other small items. Join the Grass Baskets day the following day, July 2, and you can use your bone needle to stitch your grass basket, just as our ancient ancestors would have done. Time will be set aside for connecting to the woodland surroundings, making the course a nourishing as well as a learning experience.Suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience. Grass Baskets (2 July 2017)

\"grassSpend  a day in the woods making a small stitched coiled basket from grass, some of which we’ll gather on the day. This is one of our most popular courses. People love the mellow atmosphere that grass basket-making creates. Learn about which grasses and leaves you can harvest and use, how to harvest sustainably, when to do the harvesting and how to process your harvest. We\'ll stitch with twined hemp, to make a basket that\'s sturdy and perfect for storing eggs or other similar-sized objects. You’ll leave with all the knowledge you need to make another yourself after the course. We’ll also have time set aside for connecting to the woodland surroundings, making the day a nourishing as well as a learning experience. Suitable for all levels, including beginners. Rush Foraging Baskets (16 July 2017)

\"rushSpend a day in the woods, round a roaring camp fire, making a foraging basket using true English rush (Schoenoplectus lacustris). These beautiful, tactile baskets hang across the body and are perfect for foraging berries, nuts etc... or just for carrying things in. English rush is a delightful material to work with, a native plant with a long history of use in basket making. It is particularly suited to beginners, but those with previous experience will be able to develop and consolidate existing skills. We\'ll also have time set aside for connecting to the woodland surroundings, making the day a nourishing as well as a learning experience. Suitable for all levels including beginners. Wild Pottery - Level 1 (22/23 July 2017)

\"WildThe original Wild Pottery course Spend two days in the woods making hand built pottery using clay that we\'ll dig on the day. Make an item or two of your choice: a small pot, a figurine or an oil lamp. Suitable for all levels, including beginners, and instructions for making a pot will be on hand if needed. The first day is all about earth and water: digging the clay and prepping it fully, making your pots. The second day is all about fire and wood: putting our pots into an open fire and watching them transform into ceramics. There\'ll also be an introduction to fire-making without matches (using ancient percussive methods). Time will be set aside for connecting to the woodland surroundings, making the weekend a nourishing as well as a learning experience. Places limited to a maximum of 10 people. Family Wild Pottery (29/30 July 2017)

\"WildTwo half-day sessions of wild pottery in the woods for all the family. An exciting, delightfully messy and alchemical process to be a part of. A truly valuable learning experience of the whole production cycle of making something from the initial, raw, foraged material to creating a finished product you can take home with you. We\'ll dig our clay from the ground, make our pots and then fire them in an open campfire. Mud, water, fire and wood- it\'s all in there. Adults and children alike love the hands-on, immersive and elemental experience of Wild Pottery.  This course is suitable for children aged 6-16 and no previous experience is necessary. Reed Mace ('bulrush') (2/3 Sept 2017)

\"reedSpend two days in the woods making a basketry item of your choice, using foraged wild reed mace (known as \'bulrush\'). The course has been expanded this year to allow time for you to make your own specialist tool (to take away with you), which you\'ll be using to thread your reed mace. You\'ll use flint and stone tools to make this out of bone, just as our ancient ancestors may have done. We\'ll be using Typha latifolia, a lovely material to work with, some of which we\'ll gather on the day from the site. You\'ll learn how to harvest, store and process this very useful basketry plant. We\'ll look at different weaving patterns, twining, cordage and plaiting. We\'ll also consider a variety of things you might make- a berry basket, belt pouch, phone/camera case, shoulder bag, lidded container, mat... You\'ll be guided through all stages of the making process to help you have a good understanding of the techniques. Time will be set aside for connecting to the beautiful surroundings, making the course a nourishing as well as a learning experience. Suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience who wish to expand their knowledge. Places are limited to a maximum of 10 participants. Come and make a foraging basket using true English rush (Schoenoplectus lacustris). These beautiful, tactile baskets hang across the body and are perfect for foraging berries, nuts, small  mushrooms etc... or just for carrying things in. English rush is a delightful material to work with, a native plant with a long history of use in basket making. Rush is a great to weave with as it\'s easy on the hands and quite forgiving. And it\'s amazingly versatile- you can make so many different basketry items with it. If you\'re a beginner, this is a particularly good plant to weave with. The course is made up of two sessions which will give you time to get stuck into the weaving and enjoy the rhythm of it (and gain some proficiency if you\'re new). Those with previous experience will be able to develop and consolidate existing skills.
Spaces are limited to 10 participants, so advance booking is essential. Suitable for all levels, including beginners.
