Coiled Grass Baskets
Two courses in 2019:
June 29 and August 9
Venue: we’ll be based in 70 acres of ancient coppiced woodland, on a family-run working farm. A peaceful and beautiful setting. Dernwood Farm, Waldron, Nr Heathfield, Sussex, TN21 0PN
This is one of our most popular courses. People love the mellow atmosphere that grass basket-making creates. Spend a day in the woods making a small coiled basket from grass, some of which we’ll gather on the day. Learn about which grasses you can harvest and how to process your harvest. You’ll make a basket that’s sturdy and perfect for storing eggs or other similar-sized objects.
You’ll leave with all the knowledge you need to make another yourself after the course. It’ll get you looking at verges and lawns in a whole new light.
Join the Bone Needle-Making course in May, and then bring your needle to stitch your grass basket with, just as our ancient ancestors would have done.
We’ll also have time set aside for connecting to the woodland surroundings, making the day a nourishing as well as a learning experience.
Suitable for all levels, including beginners. Groups are kept small to allow for individual attention and a satisfying learning experience.
Ruby – I wanted to thank you again for the lovely basket workshop. It was so relaxed yet focused, clear modelling with space to crack on and explore with your supportive skills and knowledge on tap. Richard S, London.
Accommodation: make a weekend of it
Camping is available at the farm venue and full details about this will be sent to you when you book on the course. The farm also has glamping options, including cosy bell tents and cabins with wood-burners.
